Common Questions

We welcome everyone and for those that are beginning their journey in Jiu Jitsu we have designed our introductory classes where you can learn the fundamentals directly with our instructor.

Bring a bottle of water (1 lt is enough) and the required uniform: Jiu Jitsu and children class – Gi and No Gi and Introductory classes – sweatpants/shorts and t-shirt.

All classes follow a program, with weekly topics. Each group class has warm-up, stand up and ground techniques followed by fight simulation drills.

Yes, we provide bespoken classes in the Isle of Dogs area either in our gym or even in the park at a time that is convenient for you.

Is it ok to train even if I don't have any background in Martial Arts?

Yes, most of the students don’t have any background and they all started in our beginner’s program as covered in the foundation classes.

Do you have a free trial for beginners?

Yes, please claim yours by filling out this form (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdmN16137CzM9ICDRka4pKpuPwt0LhG1ZGZLrj-CBLJUWZwlQ/viewform)

I can't make it in the evening class, do you have morning classes?

Morning classes can be arranged through private lessons. We will have group classes in the morning but not at the moment.

What should I bring to class?

For any gi classes you should bring your own washed gi, belt and a bottle of water. For any other classes bring either your gym clothes (t-shirt and shorts/sweatpants/leggings) or the no gi equipment (long sleeve rashguard, shorts and spats).

Am I required to spar?

You don’t need to spar if you don’t want. Sparring is good to improve your technique but your safety is our priority, so if you don’t feel like sparring (doesn’t matter why) just let the instructor know beforehand so that he is aware of your request.

When should I have my own gi?

You should buy your gi when you attend to any gi class. Gi is the traditional uniform for Jiu Jitsu.

Do you sell kimonos, rashguards, and other training gear in the academy?

We do sell no gi equipment, more specifically rash guards, spats and shorts. Feel free to ask to check them out.

Where are you located?

We are located inside Alpha Grove, a community center in the Isle of Dogs, just 10 minutes walk from Canary Wharf.

Do you have showers?

At the moment we do not have showers.

How big is your mat space?

The mat is usually 540 square feet (54 square meters), but for busier classes can increase to almost 700 square feet.

I want to specifically work on areas of my game, do you offer private classes?

Yes, we do provide private classes either individually or as a package – please go to the membership area or send an email to hello@canarywharfbjj.com
